Job Summary

The Department of Vascular Surgery in North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust is looking for an enthusiastic new colleague to join us on our journey to provide high quality vascular surgical care for the future in an organisation committed to clinical leadership and medical education.
We provide a 24/7 consultant of the week service for emergency vascular patients, elective vascular surgical operating lists, outpatient clinics and endovascular and hybrid procedures. Clinical duties are supported by a 24/7 middle grade tier.
There are 4 Vascular Nurse Specialists; two are based at the Cumberland Infirmary and two at the West Cumberland Hospital who provide emergency vascular clinics and inpatient care, with specialist interest in ulcer care, lymphoedema, and compression bandaging. We have a dedicated vascular outpatient department at West Cumberland Hospital offering outpatient clinics and vascular sonography.
A full range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are available including vascular sonography led by 2 Vascular Scientists, CT, MRI and interventional radiology.
The department delivers a robust teaching programme for doctors in training, foundation doctors, Physicians Associates and Surgical Care Practitioners.
In January 2025, we are due to open a new Vascular Lab at Cumberland Infirmary which will include 2 sonography rooms, a procedure room and dedicated office suites.
This is an opportunity to join an organisation in which clinicians are at the forefront of vascular surgical management with opportunities to practice and expand endovascular skill through close working relationships with the interventional radiology service.

Job Overview

The trust is looking for an enthusiastic surgeon to join 5 other vascular consultants to deliver elective and emergency vascular services. These posts offer the opportunity to develop sub specialist interests such as aortic aneurysms, renal access & diabetic foot management, to complement our current services. For those interested in taking on a role in leadership and management, the Trust offers opportunities for development and training.

The team will work with you to shape your job plan upon successful appointment, review it with you after three months and then annually – so you can maintain the perfect fit. We are happy to explore portfolio roles with opportunities in academic posts, leadership and medical education. They will also provide the essential resources to support you in your duties, including administrative support.

Role Specific Duties

The unit runs a 24/7 emergency vascular rota which the successful candidate will contribute to as the surgeon-of-the-week on a 1 in 6-week basis. Elective activities are cancelled during the emergency week and the emergency service will be supported by 24/7 vascular middle grade staff. Elective vascular IR is delivered by 2 vascular Interventional Radiologists and one vascular surgeon. Out-of-hours IR is delivered largely by the vascular surgeon on call at NCIC. Support for complex IR cases is provided from the vascular service in Newcastle.

The successful candidates will be expected to be trained and competent in the elective and emergency management of AAA (open and EVAR), limb ischaemia, carotid disease and acute and chronic venous disorders. Vascular consultants work closely with other services within NCIC such as the Hyperacute Stroke Unit (HASU) and renal dialysis unit to provide prompt carotid interventions and support dialysis access. With the diabetes service and specialist podiatrists the unit has invested in developing a multi- disciplinary diabetic foot service for our population.
