The Consultant in General Internal Medicine will be responsible for providing comprehensive care for general medical inpatients, managing acute medical admissions, and contributing to multi-disciplinary teams. The consultant will work closely with colleagues across various specialties, participate in ward rounds, manage patients in the AAU, and support the unplanned care group in delivering services. The role includes leading clinical governance initiatives, supporting research activities, and providing education and training to junior doctors and medical students. The consultant will also contribute to the general medical on-call rota, offering advice and clinical leadership during on-call shifts.
Main Duties:
Clinical Responsibilities:
Provide senior medical leadership for inpatients on general medical wards.
Participate in ward rounds, including the Acute Assessment Unit (AAU) and ensure timely assessment and treatment of new admissions.
Offer clinical leadership and decision-making during on-call periods, which includes managing emergency cases and providing advice to junior doctors.
Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams, including nurses, allied health professionals, and specialty consultants, to ensure high-quality patient care.
Support the management of complex medical cases, including patients with multi-morbidities and those requiring intensive care.
Leadership and Service Development:
Work with the Unplanned Care Division to improve clinical services and develop pathways that ensure efficient and high-quality patient care.
Lead and participate in clinical governance activities, including audits, quality improvement projects, and risk management strategies.
Contribute to service development by providing input on departmental policies and procedures, and offering innovative solutions to challenges faced in general internal medicine.
Teaching And Research:
Provide clinical teaching and mentorship to junior medical staff, medical students, and allied health professionals.
Participate in educational programs, contribute to curriculum development, and provide supervision for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Engage in research activities and audits relevant to general internal medicine, with opportunities to lead research projects and present findings at regional and national conferences.
Administration and Professional Development:
Complete administrative tasks related to patient care, including maintaining accurate patient records and clinical documentation.
Participate in annual appraisals, job planning, and revalidation processes, ensuring continuous professional development and adherence to clinical standards.
Maintain compliance with Trust policies, including infection prevention, health and safety, and safeguarding procedures.
On-Call Responsibilities:
Participate in a 1:11 consultant on-call rota, providing clinical leadership and advice during emergency shifts, which may involve coming to the hospital if required.
Conduct weekend rounds, ensure continuity of care for admitted patients, and manage emergency admissions during the on-call period.
