Job Summary

North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust (NCIC) are are looking for a dynamic, forward-thinking consultant physician in geriatric medicine to join a team including medical and nurse consultants in the Elderly Care Department at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle (CIC).

Job Overview

The role involves delivering high-quality care for frail elderly patients within a multidisciplinary framework at Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle. The consultant will contribute to the development of frailty services, teaching, research, and clinical governance while ensuring excellent patient outcomes.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Patient Care:

Provide clinical care to patients in a 32-bedded elderly care ward as part of the frailty pathway.
Conduct rapid access frailty clinics offering Comprehensive Geriatric Assessments.
Contribute to reducing unplanned admissions via "hot" clinics and GP support.
Participate in the acute frailty pathway and rotational ward cover.

Service Development:

Collaborate with colleagues to develop acute frailty services and integrate care with primary and community health teams.
Ensure robust care planning to maintain elderly patients’ independence and reduce crises.
Assist in service management, including business planning and audit initiatives.

On-Call Commitments:

Participate in a 1 in 12 on-call rota with responsibilities including acute admissions and weekend patient reviews.

Teaching and Research:

Teach and mentor junior doctors, medical students, and multidisciplinary team members.
Supervise and support clinical audits, research projects, and departmental publications.

Clinical Governance and CPD:

Actively participate in clinical governance, quality improvement, and risk management.
Maintain professional development through CPD activities, annual appraisals, and re-validation.

Workload and Job Plan

Full-time position with 10 Programmed Activities (PAs):
- 8.5 PAs for Direct Clinical Care.
- 1.5 PAs for Supporting Professional Activities (e.g., CPD, research, and teaching).
Flexible working arrangements can be negotiated to meet service needs.

Research, Audit, and Clinical Governance	Commitment to and experience in medical audits and clinical governance. Evidence of research experience.	Supervising postgraduate research. Publications in peer-reviewed journals.
Personal Skills and Attributes	Empathetic and sensitive approach to patient needs. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team. Confidence without arrogance.	Strong IT and presentation skills.
