Job Summary

The Specialty Doctor in Emergency Medicine will provide high-quality care to patients presenting to the Emergency Department. The doctor will manage a broad range of medical and surgical emergencies across adult and paediatric populations, contributing to resuscitation, acute care, and decision-making for admissions or safe discharges. The role involves working within a multidisciplinary team to ensure timely and effective treatment while supporting the education of junior staff and participating in departmental improvement initiatives.

Job Overview

The Specialty Doctor will deliver clinical services within the Emergency Department, managing patients presenting with various medical, surgical, and traumatic emergencies. The role includes participation in resuscitation, acute care, and ambulatory pathways, as well as contributing to the smooth operation of the department through effective resource management. The doctor will support junior staff, engage in teaching, and participate in departmental audits and quality improvement projects.

Main Duties:

Clinical Responsibilites:

Provide care for patients presenting with a wide range of emergency conditions in all areas of the department, including Resuscitation, Majors, Minors, and Paediatrics.

Perform initial assessments, diagnostics, and treatments, including advanced life support measures.

Ensure timely referrals for patients requiring admission or specialty team interventions.

Safely discharge patients, providing clear follow-up plans and advice.

Service Development:

Contribute to departmental quality improvement projects, audits, and the development of clinical protocols.

Support the implementation of initiatives to enhance patient flow and care pathways within the department.

Teaching and Supervision:

Mentor and supervise junior doctors, medical students, and nursing staff.

Participate in formal and informal teaching sessions, including case discussions and skills training.

Teamwork & Communication:

Collaborate with consultants, Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACPs), and nursing staff to ensure a multidisciplinary approach to patient care.

Maintain effective communication with patients, relatives, and colleagues, ensuring clarity and professionalism at all times.

Requirements

Qualifications:

Full GMC registration with a license to practice.

Primary MRCEM or equivalent qualification.

Experience:

At least four years of full-time postgraduate training, with a minimum of two years in emergency medicine or a relevant specialty.

Provider status in Advanced Life Support (ALS) or equivalent.

Skills:

Proficiency in managing critically ill patients and performing life-saving interventions.

Strong teamwork, communication, and leadership skills.

Ability to supervise and mentor junior staff and contribute to quality improvement initiatives.
