Job Summary

The Locum Consultant Paediatrician will be responsible for delivering high-quality care in paediatric and neonatal medicine, including inpatient, outpatient, and emergency services. This fixed-term, 12-month role is based at Hereford County Hospital, and the consultant will work within a multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive care for children and families across Herefordshire and the surrounding areas. The position includes opportunities to develop a special interest in paediatrics while contributing to teaching, research, and service development.

Job Overview

The Locum Consultant Paediatrician will provide consultant-led care across paediatric and neonatal services. This includes managing inpatients, outpatients, and acute care, as well as contributing to the Consultant of the Week (CoW) rota and twilight shifts. The consultant will participate in service improvement initiatives, engage in clinical audits, and support the education and training of junior doctors and multidisciplinary staff.

Main Duties:

Clinical Responsibilites:
  • Deliver high-quality care to children in the inpatient ward, neonatal unit, and outpatient clinics.
  • Provide acute care as part of the on-call and CoW rotas, including twilight shifts and night duties.
  • Lead multidisciplinary ward rounds and ensure effective care coordination.
  • Undertake safeguarding medicals and manage complex cases in collaboration with the wider team.

    • Service Development:
  • Contribute to the development of paediatric services and clinical pathways.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to implement evidence-based practices and enhance patient outcomes.

    • Teaching and Supervision:
  • Provide education and mentorship to junior doctors, medical students, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Support the training of staff in child safeguarding and advanced paediatric care.

    • Research & Governance:
  • Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement projects, and national reporting standards.
  • Engage in research activities to advance paediatric care within the department.

    • Administrative & Leadership Duties:
  • Support the management and strategic development of the paediatric department.
  • Maintain effective communication with patients, families, and colleagues to ensure a collaborative approach to care.


    • Requirements

    Qualifications:

  • Full GMC registration with a license to practice.
  • MRCPCH (or equivalent).
  • On the GMC Specialist Register for General Paediatrics or within six months of obtaining a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT).

    • Experience:

  • Strong general paediatric and neonatal background with practical skills in acute and long-term paediatric care.
  • Experience in child safeguarding and participation in clinical governance.

    • Skills:

  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
  • Competence in managing paediatric emergencies and neonatal care.
  • Commitment to education, training, and service improvement.
