Job Overview

General Duties

Multidisciplinary team working is a key component of the working in the department.
To work alongside colleagues across the multi-disciplinary team to ensure a high quality and safe service for patients is maintained at all times.
To provide cover for colleagues’ annual leave and other authorised absences.
To participate in the consultant on-call rota to provide continuous consultant cover The arrangements for consultant cover and out of hours duties will be:
To participate in the Acute Oncology Service
To ensure that proper clinical records are made and maintained.
To ensure that all inpatients are regularly reviewed and appropriate management plans are in place for all patients.
To attend relevant multi-disciplinary team meetings.
To undertake continuing medical education facilitated by funded study leave.
To participate in clinical audit, including supporting junior medical staff with their audit programmes and to maintain proper clinical records for this purpose.
To provide training for medical and non-medical staff in the department and teaching sessions for other hospital staff.
To participate in department staff appraisals as appropriate.
To provide continuing responsibility for patients in the post holder’s charge and in partnership with colleagues across the hospital to ensure the proper function of the department and hospital.
To undertake administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the running of outpatient clinics.
To undertake other duties as appropriate for a consultant oncologist not otherwise specified.
Promote a friendly and team based working environment – in line with our Trust Values.
To undertake managerial and budgetary responsibilities as required.
Teaching of primary care colleagues and junior medical staff through mixture of case-based review and formal teaching activity

Job Plan

The changing nature of the contracting process makes it essential that all consultants have a flexible approach to working arrangements which may include innovative working patterns, including 7 day working in the future. The job plan will be reviewed at a 3, 6 and 12 monthly interval following initial appointment. The job plan (for a full-time contract) will consist of the following (provisional timetable below):

Direct Clinical Care: 8.5 PAs on average per week (Includes clinical activity, clinical related administrative activity, predictable and unpredictable work)
Supporting Professional Activities: 1.5 PAs on average per week (Includes CPD, audit, teaching and research)
Additional payment for on call will be calculated once job plan is finalised (if applicable to role)
