Job Summary

The Consultant Physician in Medical Microbiology and Virology / Consultant in Infection will be responsible for providing specialist clinical and diagnostic microbiology and virology services across the Coventry and Warwickshire Pathology Service (CWPS). The role involves working collaboratively with clinical teams to ensure high standards of infection control and patient care. This is a part-time position (8 Programmed Activities) based at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, with responsibilities across other sites in the network.

Job Overview

The Consultant in Microbiology and Virology will provide expert clinical advice on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of infectious diseases. This includes interpretation of laboratory results, supporting the management of infection outbreaks, and advising on antimicrobial stewardship. The consultant will also have responsibilities in infection prevention and control, working closely with relevant teams across multiple sites to ensure the highest standards of patient care.

Main Duties:

Clinical Responsibilities:

Provide clinical advice on the diagnosis and management of infections to clinicians, nursing staff, and laboratory personnel.

Interpret microbiology and virology laboratory results and advise on appropriate treatment options, including antimicrobial therapy.

Participate in multidisciplinary meetings and provide expert input on infection cases, including those requiring complex management.

Manage infection outbreaks, providing leadership in the development and implementation of infection control strategies.

Service Development:

Lead the evaluation and implementation of new microbiology and virology diagnostic techniques, ensuring services remain evidence-based and aligned with best practices.

Contribute to the development and review of clinical guidelines and policies across the Trust.

Teaching And Education:

Provide clinical supervision and teaching to junior doctors, medical trainees, and other healthcare professionals.

Participate in postgraduate and undergraduate teaching programs, delivering lectures and workshops as required.

Research and Quality Improvement:

Engage in clinical research projects, contributing to the development of new diagnostic and treatment protocols.

Participate in clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing infection prevention and control practices.

Infection Control and Prevention:

Work closely with the Infection Prevention and Control team to monitor infection rates, develop control measures, and ensure compliance with best practices.

Support the investigation of healthcare-associated infections and root cause analyses.

Qualifications:

Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath) or equivalent in Microbiology or Virology.

Full GMC registration with a license to practice.

CCT in Medical Microbiology, Virology, or dual accreditation in Infectious Diseases and Microbiology/Virology (or within 6 months of obtaining this).

Experience:

Broad clinical experience in Microbiology and Virology.

Experience in infection prevention and control practices.

Experience in the UK healthcare system or a similar system is desirable.
