Job Summary

The Directorate of Plastic and Breast Surgery at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are looking to recruit a Whole-time Consultant Plastic Surgeon with a special interest in the management of burn injury. The applicant should also have an interest in less complex skin
management. The post will primarily be based at the Northern General Hospital but will also work at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and Sheffield Children's Hospital.
The appointee will, together with Consultant colleagues be responsible for the provision of general Plastic Surgery and Burns management practice to enable the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Trust to fulfil its service agreements with Sheffield Health and other commissioners.

Job Overview

· Clinical Care:

Provide specialist care for patients with acute burns, as well as chronic burns sequelae, including burn reconstruction and rehabilitation.
Conduct complex burns surgery, including acute management and long-term reconstructive procedures (e.g., grafting, scar revision, and functional restoration).
Lead the development of personalized care plans for burns patients and provide comprehensive post-operative care.
Provide clinical leadership in the burns unit, managing patients with severe and extensive burns requiring intensive care and multidisciplinary involvement.

· Multidisciplinary Team Collaboration:

Work closely with the burns unit's multidisciplinary team, including nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and psychological support staff.
Participate in daily ward rounds, burns clinical meetings, and joint decision-making on complex burns cases.
Collaborate with other specialties, including intensive care, rehabilitation, and plastic surgery, to deliver holistic care for burns patients.

· Education & Training:

Supervise and mentor junior staff, including medical trainees, clinical fellows, and nurses in burns care.
Provide training on burns management and reconstructive surgery techniques, both within the Trust and at external training events.
Stay current with new advancements in burns treatment and surgical techniques and contribute to departmental teaching.

· Research & Audit:

Actively contribute to clinical research focused on burns care, reconstructive techniques, and outcomes.
Participate in audits, service evaluations, and quality improvement initiatives within the burns service.
Publish research findings in relevant academic journals and contribute to national and international burns-related conferences.

· Leadership & Governance:

Lead and contribute to the development of burns care guidelines, protocols, and clinical pathways.
Ensure that clinical governance processes are adhered to, maintaining high standards of care, patient safety, and quality.
Participate in departmental meetings, including those focused on clinical performance, patient safety, and continuous service improvement.

The allocation of time between the various duties of the post will be open to some adjustment in consultation with consultant colleagues and the employing Trust, but initially will be as follows: -

Qualifications and Training	Full and Specialist registration (with a license to practice) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview. If an applicant is UK trained, they must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. Completed specialist fellowship training in Burns.	MD or PhD degree MRCS
Clinical Experience	Broad experience in the generality of Plastic Surgery with a particular emphasis on burns and skin cancer management. Needs to have current Safeguarding Interview Child/Adult competencies, paediatric burns experience/competencies. Good knowledge of modern surgical techniques including the use of skin substitutes and reconstruction techniques.	Experience in SLNB for malignant melanoma. Experience of complex soft tissue reconstruction including chest, abdominal wall or perineal reconstruction.
Research	Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practise when appropriate.	Publications in Peer reviewed journals.
Teaching and Training	Experience of teaching student doctors and doctors in training at all levels.	To have the ability to teach to all groups of staff.
Continuous Professional Development	Evidence of participation in CME/CPD in the last 12 months.	Maintenance of a CPD diary or portfolio.
Management and Administration	Evidence of the understanding of the systems and structures of NHS Management.	Experience of working with management groups.
Clinical governance and Audit	Committed to and understands the principles of clinical governance. Experience in performing clinical audit. Understands the principles outlined in the GMC document Good Medical Practice. Understands the requirements of Medical Appraisal and Revalidation.	Completion and publication of a substantive audit project or service improvement project.
Personal Attributes	Demonstrates behaviour consistent with PROUD values. Good time management skills. Good oral and written communication skills. Ensures value for money is considered in all that they do.
