Job Summary
The Consultant General Anaesthetist will be responsible for providing high-quality anaesthetic care across a range of specialties, including general surgery, obstetrics, trauma, and critical care. The role is based at North Devon District Hospital and involves contributing to the on-call rota, supporting emergency cases, and providing perioperative care. The consultant will also participate in teaching, service development, and clinical governance activities.
Job Overview
The Consultant General Anaesthetist will provide anaesthetic services for elective and emergency surgeries at North Devon District Hospital. This includes pre-operative assessment, anaesthesia for surgeries, post-operative care, and support for critical care and maternity units. The role also involves contributing to the 1-in-12 on-call rota and supporting emergency theatre and pain management services. The consultant will be expected to participate in teaching, research, and quality improvement initiatives within the department.

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Provide general anaesthesia for elective and emergency surgical procedures across multiple specialties.
  • Participate in pre-operative assessments and post-operative care for patients.
  • Deliver obstetric anaesthesia and pain management, including the provision of epidural services.
  • Support the Critical Care Unit and provide leadership in the management of critically ill patients.
  • Participate in the on-call rota, providing out-of-hours anaesthesia and emergency theatre support.

    • Leadership and Service Development:

  • Take a proactive role in the development of anaesthesia services and contribute to quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
  • Work closely with clinical leads and other consultants to improve service delivery and implement new clinical pathways.

    • Teaching and Supervision:

  • Supervise and mentor junior doctors, anaesthetic trainees, and medical students.
  • Contribute to departmental teaching and training programs, including simulation-based education and multidisciplinary training.

    • Research and Audit:

  • Engage in clinical research and participate in departmental audits and governance activities.
  • Support the Trust’s research agenda and contribute to national and local audit programs.

    Requirements

    Qualification:

  • Full GMC registration with a license to practice.
  • CCT in Anaesthetics or within six months of achieving it at the time of interview.
  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FRCA) or equivalent.

    • Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in general anaesthesia, with the ability to manage a broad range of cases.
  • Experience in obstetric anaesthesia, perioperative medicine, and regional anaesthesia is desirable.
  • Evidence of engagement in clinical governance, teaching, and research.

    • Skills:

  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities, with the capacity to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Leadership skills and a commitment to service improvement and innovation.
  • Ability to supervise and mentor junior medical staff.
