Job Summary

The Specialist Doctor (SD) in Emergency Medicine (Higher Level) will provide high-quality care in the Emergency Department, managing patients with a wide range of acute medical, surgical, and traumatic conditions. This fixed-term role offers opportunities to develop skills equivalent to an StR3+ level, working within a multidisciplinary team to deliver excellent patient care in a fast-paced environment.

Job Overview

The SD in Emergency Medicine will provide initial assessment, treatment, and management of patients presenting to the Emergency Department, including in the resuscitation area. The doctor will offer support to junior colleagues and collaborate with consultants and other specialties as required. The role includes participating in departmental educational activities, audits, and clinical governance, while supporting the smooth operation of the Emergency Department.

Main Duties:

Clinical Responsibilites:

Manage patients presenting with a variety of medical, surgical, and traumatic emergencies.

Provide care in the resuscitation area, ensuring rapid and accurate decision-making.

Support junior doctors by offering guidance and supervision when needed.

Collaborate with consultants and specialty teams to facilitate patient care and referrals.

Service Development:

Contribute to clinical audits and quality improvement projects within the department.

Participate in initiatives to enhance patient care pathways and service delivery.

Comply with the Trust’s clinical governance framework and participate in appraisal and revalidation processes.

Teaching and Supervision:

Participate actively in teaching medical students, nurses, and junior doctors.

Attend departmental educational activities, including simulation courses and clinical teaching sessions.

Maintain a training and development portfolio, working towards achieving competencies for future career progression.

Teamwork and Communication:

Liaise with nurses, allied health professionals, and administrative staff to ensure smooth department operations.

Communicate effectively with patients and their families to explain treatment plans and outcomes.

Training Opportunities:

Attendance at an induction program covering departmental IT systems and procedures.

Access to advanced trauma simulation courses, ultrasound training, and other CPD-approved activities.

Support for building a portfolio aimed at achieving CESR certification for entry onto the GMC Specialist Register via a non-UK training route.

Requirements

Qualifications:

Medical degree from a recognized university.

Full GMC registration with a license to practice.

Membership of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (MRCEM)

Advanced Life Support (ALS) provider certification.

Experience:

At least 12 months of experience in emergency medicine.

Demonstrated competence in managing the full range of emergency presentations.

Previous exposure to acute or intensive care medicine is desirable.

Skills:

Strong decision-making and problem-solving abilities in high-pressure situations.

Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Capacity for leadership and effective multidisciplinary collaboration.
