Education and Qualifications
|
- Full GMC Registration with a current license to practice.
- Success in Intercollegiate Specialty Examination or overseas equivalent.
- FRCS or qualification of an equivalent level.
|
|
Experience and Knowledge
|
- Broad training/experience in all aspects of General Surgery.
- Training and Experience in Upper GI surgery, including complex
benign Upper GI surgery, particularly hiatal surgery and surgical management
of bile duct stones.
- Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems both
emergency and elective within specialty.
- Ability to perform Upper GI diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy
(JETS/JAG accreditation).

- Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for
gaining (UK) CCST in General Surgery.
- Experience/Training in ERCP & trans nasal endoscopy.
|
Management and Administrative Skills
|
- Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively.
- Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist
service.
- Ability to organise and manage outpatient priorities.
- Ability to manage and lead the General Surgery firm and
multi-disciplinary team.
- Experience of audit management and conducting clinical audit.
|
- Ability to use the evidence base and clinical audit to support
decision making.
|
Teaching
|
- Ability to teach clinical skills to medical, nursing staff and
other disciplines staff.
|
- Experience of teaching undergraduates and postgraduates e.g.
courses.
- Higher qualification in medical education.
|
Research, Audit, and Clinical Governance
|
- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems.
- An awareness of current specialty specific developments and
initiatives.
|
- Evidence of having undertaken original research e.g. research
based publication.
|
Communication
skills and abilities
|
- Ability to work in a team.
- Enquiring, critical approach to work.
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, GPs,
nurses and other agencies.
- Commitment to Continuing Medical Education.

- Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities
at local level.
