The Consultant in Stroke Medicine will join the Stroke Medicine team within the Neurosciences department, providing high-quality care for stroke patients at a large teaching hospital. The consultant will be responsible for managing patients across the Hyper Acute Stroke Unit (HASU), Stroke Unit, and outpatient clinics, contributing to a comprehensive stroke service. The role includes responsibilities in clinical care, teaching, and research, and the consultant will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver the best outcomes for patients.

Job Overview

The Consultant in Stroke Medicine will provide expert clinical care across the stroke pathway, including emergency stroke treatment, inpatient management, and follow-up care. The role involves conducting ward rounds on the Hyper Acute Stroke Unit (HASU) and Stroke Unit, seeing new referrals, and providing senior leadership in the management of stroke patients. The consultant will also contribute to the teaching of medical students and junior doctors and participate in research and quality improvement projects.

Main Duties:

Clinical Responsibilities:

Lead daily ward rounds on the HASU and Stroke Unit, managing new admissions and ongoing care.

Provide urgent assessment and treatment of acute stroke and TIA patients, including thrombolysis and thrombectomy care.

Conduct outpatient follow-up clinics for stroke and TIA patients, ensuring continuity of care.

Review imaging and liaise with neuroradiologists for advanced stroke imaging interpretation

Teaching and Supervision:

Teach and supervise junior doctors, stroke nurse practitioners, and other healthcare professionals.

Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programs, delivering lectures and hands-on training.

Multidisciplinary Collaboration:

Work closely with stroke nurse practitioners, therapists, and the wider multidisciplinary team to deliver a comprehensive stroke service.

Participate in weekly stroke multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, ensuring collaborative decision-making for patient care.

Provide clinical leadership for the stroke service, including contributing to the development of pathways and protocols.

Research and Governance:

Engage in clinical research projects, contributing to stroke research and the publication of findings.

Participate in clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives to enhance the stroke service and patient care.

Attend governance meetings and contribute to maintaining high standards of clinical care.

Requirements

Qualifications:

Full GMC registration with a license to practice.

CCT in Stroke Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, Neurology, or General Internal Medicine, or within six months of completion.

Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP) or equivalent.

Experience:

Experience in stroke care, including acute and rehabilitative management.

Proven ability to lead a multidisciplinary team and contribute to service development.

Evidence of teaching, research, and involvement in clinical governance.

Skills:

Strong communication and leadership abilities.

Expertise in diagnosing and managing acute strokes and transient ischemic attacks (TIA).

Commitment to continuous professional development and improving clinical practices.
